These days a wide number of trumpeters are approaching Latin music styles more and more. The suggestion I want to give is not to underestimate the task. Afro-Latin-American music is a very complex field, just as the American Jazz or European Classical music. There are so many geographic areas and currents (Antilles, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Jamaica, Santo Domingo, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, etc..) each containing a huge tradition of rhythms and history often very different from each other. During all 1900, these countries have developed and produced so many songs and arrangements that honestly is a shame to believe that Latin music is only a current of American jazz or a “south of the border danceable beat”. Every tune you find in this selection is very different from another. Purposely composed and chosen to show how many technical aspects we need to remember when approaching Latin music. That is why before each song you will find a short explanation of the sound, style, rhythm, clave, geographical origin and referral to better understand how to play correctly the charts. Approach these themes and section charts listening to the original recording first and in general pay attention to the phrasing of the instruments playing each section. The staccato, the vibrato, the length of each note, pay close attention to the whole brass section. Attitude, sound and interpretation are very different from regular jazz, blues, rock or funk.
